That's right folks, there is no proof for cirrhosis and no proof there isn't. The official Final Pathologic Diagnosis is: Liver tissue with mild chronic inflammation.
For liver friends: She doesn't have an iron overload or Alpha 1. They did Trichrome and Reticulum Stains, too (something with connective tissue -- must be OK)
What does this all mean?????????
Um......basically we don't know. Her liver doctor is going to look at the slides personally. He said about 10-20% of liver biopsies will miss cirrhosis. Then the slides will be sent to the transplant center for their evaluation. Basically, limbo is where she stands. The liver doctor still feels she needs to be transplanted. He is also concerned about the rise in the AST, Bili and Alakaline Phosphate. He isn't sure it is from the biopsy or from the experimental drug. So more blood tests in 2 weeks. So this biopsy may have been for nothing. Just have to see what "Miracle Magic - the liver doctor" can figure out and pull out of his hat. A lot rests on his shoulders now.
Good news, however, is our HMO is already considering adding Eltrombopag (the experimental drug) to the formulary. He will see if Fiona can get it on a regular basis when it is available.
Since last week when Fiona stopped taking the drug, her platelets have increased more as well has her red and white blood cells. So this is a good medicine and could help a lot of people. I'm hoping it will be available soon to the many who could benefit from it.
