United States Air Force Band

We went to San Pedro today to attend a concert by the USAF. It was fantastic. The Warner Grand Theater has been beautifully restored. The woodwork inside was just breath taking. The music was wonderful and they did a tribute to fallen soldiers that just brought tears to our eyes. It was a good day!

Senior Airman Jill Corbett

Senior Airman Jill Corbett joined the USAF Band of the Golden West in June of 2003. A native of Lee's Summit, Missouri, she is the principal tubist with the Concert Band and Rhythm n' Brass.

Prior to joining the Air Force, Airman Corbett earned a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri. In 2003 she completed her graduate studies in music and received a Master of Music in Tuba Performance from Indiana University. Airman Corbett's accomplishments include winning the Kansas City Symphony Solo Artist Competition, the Glenn Miller Solo Artist Award, and was a "People to People" Student Ambassador to Australia and New Zealand. She was a member of the Missouri Lions All-State Band, the All-Collegiate National Band, and attended the First Annual Youth Orchestra Symposium in Banff, Canada. Her teachers include Summit Brass members Daniel Perantoni, Sam Pilafian and Harvey Phillips, Steven Seward of the Kansas City Symphony, and the great jazz performing artist, Mike Metheny.

Senior Airman Corbett distinguished herself as an Honor Graduate at the USAF Basic Military Training. During her off-duty time, Airman Corbett devotes many hours to quilting, motorcycling and playing with her pets Effie and Suite.

Jill plays with the Band of the Golden West. The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West is stationed in the San Francisco Bay area at Travis Air Force Base, CA. The only active duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, the Band of the Golden West is comprised of 47 talented and versatile Airmen-musicians under the command of Major Keith H. Bland. In addition to performing for civilian communities throughout California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Nevada, the band supports 10 Air Force Bases, 5 Air Force Reserve Wings, and 5 recruiting squadrons in over 500 annual performances for 1.5 million listeners.

Biliary Atresia

Biliary atresia is a condition in which the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine are not normal. These ducts can be injured, blocked, or missing. When the ducts that carry bile out of the liver are closed, bile backs up and damages liver tissue. In time the liver can develop scarring or cirrhosis. The gallbladder may also be abnormal or missing. The cause of Biliary Atresia is unknown. It occurs in one infant in every 15,000 live births. It is a serious disease which requires immediate surgical and medical treatment.

Arteriovenous Malformations AVMS

I have been diagnosed with AVMS in my lungs do to my liver disease. These have caused me to have 2 lung bleeds which were very scary. I still have more AVMS and they are causing me breathing problems. Below is an explanation of what the AVMs are and a picture of what is happening in my lungs.

Arteries and veins are part of the human cardiovascular system. Normally, the arteries in the vascular system carry oxygen-rich blood at a relatively high pressure. Structurally, arteries divide and sub-divide repeatedly, eventually forming a sponge-like capillary bed. Blood moves through the capillaries, giving up oxygen and taking up waste products from the surrounding cells. Capillaries successively join together, one upon the other, to form the veins that carry blood away at a relatively low pressure. The heart acts to pump blood from the low pressure veins to the high pressure arteries.
If the capillary bed is thought of as a sponge, then an AVM is the rough equivalent of jamming a tangle of flexible soda straws from artery to vein through that sponge. On arteriogram films AVM formation often resemble a tangle of spaghetti noodles. This tangle of blood vessels forms a relatively direct connection between high pressure arteries and low pressure veins.
The result is a collection of blood vessels with abnormal connections and no capillaries. This collection, often called a nidus, can be extremely fragile and prone to bleeding.
